Smayla Road & trail journals

Emmanuelle & Christian · Valais, Switzerland

More than sixty years apart,
one single road.

One still carries the scent of warm oil from the roads of 1963. The other, born in 2024, reads the track before we do. And we, somewhere in between, take our time. Often we switch off the engine and set out on foot: a pass, a ridge, a certain light, a meal by the side of the trail.

When the engine falls silent

There are journeys where the Jeep waits for us at the foot of the trail, and others where it stays at home. The finest landscapes are earned one step at a time: a steaming lava field, a cliff plunging into the Atlantic, a levada lost in the mist, an alpine pasture above our own home.
