Skaftafell, glaciers and lagoons

A "wow" day: jökulls, glacial lagoons and, to finish, a superb 17-kilometre hike above Skaftafell, ending in the dark. Hard to choose the photos, everything is so beautiful.

The lagoons

Icebergs and tongues of ice

The day begins on the shores of the glacial lagoons: stranded icebergs, blocks of blue ice and, behind them, the tongues of Vatnajökull reaching down to the water.

The sky is an intense blue, and the still water mirrors the glaciers. On the way, a little turf-roofed church surrounded by its all-green cemetery.

The Skaftafell hike

Into the night

Late in the day, we set off on a big 17-kilometre loop. The path climbs onto the ridges with the glacier spread out below, then past red-tinted peaks and valleys where glacial rivers wind.

The evening light gilds the grassy slopes, the rivers shine in the valley floors, and the hike ends in the dark. A wow, wooow, WOOOOW day.
