Around the Rocher du Vent, from Roselend

A last-minute weekend away, no motorways, and a Sunday hike dreamt up by Christian: around the Rocher du Vent from the Roselend dam, via Lac de la Gittaz and the Col de la Sauce. A wonderful discovery.

Roselend and La Gittaz

Goal: go around the Rocher du Vent

Setting off on the shore of Lac de Roselend, an incredible turquoise blue, found almost by chance. The path climbs above the water, and the dam comes into view from the first small pass.

Then another small lake, La Gittaz, and a path that is just perfect, still bright with fireweed despite the heatwave summer. Two trees on a ridge, a dappled sky we couldn't stop photographing.

The Col de la Sauce

The Curé's path and the GR 5

A pretty little climb, then the Chemin du Curé, built in 1860, cut into the rock face above the gorge. Even in the heatwave, there are still small fords to cross.

At the Col de la Sauce, at 2,300 metres, we join the GR 5 for the long descent. Tarine cows rest in the golden grass, the Rocher du Vent comes back into view, and we finish at the dam, by the little chapel facing the lake. Not a short stroll, but splendid.
