Mont Aigoual, in the cool

A good hike in the Cévennes, just the way we both like them: Mont Aigoual, on a route billed as 'difficult' and 'cool'. Difficult, not really. Cool, yes: a lovely loop of about 13 kilometres through nature quite different from our Alps.

The climb

The Cévennes as far as the eye can see

At the start, wild pinks and a brimstone butterfly in the grass. The path climbs through the ever-present forest, with the Cévennes ridges rolling on endlessly.

A different landscape from our Alps, but the same vigour. Between the trees and the 1,500 metres of altitude, it is pleasantly cool.

The summit

The observatory and the Causses side

At the top, at 1,567 metres, the Mont Aigoual weather observatory, the south-eastern bastion of the Massif Central, known for its panorama. On a clear day you should be able to see Mont Blanc.

The way down crosses the slopes of the Prat-Peyrot ski resort, where the parked snow groomers delight Christian, then the Causses side of the mountain. Simply sublime.
