The climb

Above the Rhône plain

The path climbs steeply through the larch forest, then over scree and rocky sections, some of them fitted with chains. Below, the Rhône plain unrolls all the way to the lake.

Rock pinnacles, a cairn and a cross on a shoulder, then the stony cirque leading to the Col de la Golette. Not sure I'd do it again, writes Emmanuelle: there were a few scares.

Lakes and ibex

On the other side opens the Salanfe plateau, with small lakes reflecting the Dents du Midi and the Tour Sallière. Summer 2022 is dry: cotton grass by the water, cracked earth, Lac de Salanfe very low.

The way back goes through a gallery cut into the rock, then past turquoise and green tarns. And to finish, ibex by the path. So BEAUTIFUL.
