Caldera Blanca, walking on lava

The sea of lava

A lunar territory

The path sets off through the vast lava fields born of the 1730 to 1736 eruptions. The rock is black, chaotic, bare of vegetation apart from a few lichens. A long, almost flat walk through the heart of a lunar landscape.

You reach the small Montaña Caldereta volcano, where you can walk into the heart of the crater and feel tiny. Then the scenery changes at the foot of Montaña Blanca, paler and softer.

The rim

Around the crater

The climb is gradual and accessible, with the sea of lava you have just crossed always at your back. You reach the rim, and the inside of the crater opens up all at once, huge and straw-blond.

The loop continues along the ridge to the summit at 534 metres: the ocean on one side, the black flows on the other, ice plants flowering among the stones. Then back down to the lava fields. Ten kilometres of pure joy, almost: walking on lava is hard on the feet.
