The climb

A festival of flowers

From the Col du Pillon past little Lac Retaud, then up towards the Col d'Isenau. The still-snowy Diablerets close the horizon and the slopes are a garden: midnight-blue gentians, sulphur anemones, globularia, alpenroses.

On the plateau, a scatter of small lakes mirrors the sky. We walk slowly, so as not to miss anything.

The lake

Arnon's jewel box

Lake Arnon finally appears, set in its case of forests and peaks, an unreal turquoise green. A well-earned spritz on the terrace by the water.

Back over the pastures and limestone rocks above Lac Retaud. Seventeen kilometres, a lot of heat, and a luminous day.
