The route
Up on foot, down by chairlift
An aperitif on the way up the Simplon, another on the way down on a little terrace in Simplon-Dorf, then two nights in San Domenico, discovered thanks to the Magic Pass in winter. In summer the walks are superb.
Our 88-year-old champion handles the climbs well, the descents less so: the route was built accordingly. A wide track through russet pastures, views over the Ossola valleys, 2,473 metres at the top, a bistro and the chairlift back down. We'll be back.
