The route
The right way round
A classic we never tire of, to be done anticlockwise: climb to the pass from the Chalet du Soldat rather than descend it. The memory was right. The Grossmutterloch, where the devil is said to have thrown his grandmother, lets the sun through around 11 am in winter.
At Wolfs Ort, 1,921 metres, you cross from Fribourg into Bern, and behind the Gastlosen a huge pasture opens out, almost a steppe, sublime in autumn. Limestone walls nearly three hundred metres high, slippery ground on the north flank, and the chairlift to finish. The family photos stay in the album; here, the landscapes.
